Artemisinin or Qinghaosu is extracted from a traditional herb named Qinghao which distributes widely in China. It is one of a few anti-inflammatory herbs that can be used with symptoms of wasting and Yin deficiency. However, the biggest contribution of artemisinin for people is to treat the Malaria. According to large amount of clinic experiments, this compound works well in an iron rich environment ( malaria lives in the red blood cell rich in iron) through the release of free radicals that serve to damage the malaria organism. So far, some successful experiments show its effect against a wide variety of cancers. The most effective is to treat leukemia and colon cancer. Intermediate activities were also shown against melanoma, breast, ovarian, prostate, and renal cancer. More, artemisinin is insoluble in water, so it is able to cross the blood brain barrier for curing brain tumors.
